Input your zip code using this LINK and see if you are one of the estimated 218 million Americans consuming a known carcinogen. Chromium-6, widely known as the Erin Brockovich chemical, is natural yet rare in nature. However, industrial processes cause Chromium-6 to be unearthed (mined) in unnatural amounts.
If your results from the interactive map (courtesy of Environmental Working Group-ERG) are that your levels exceed .02 ppb (parts per billion), then you have exceeded the protective-of-public-health goal set by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
The EPA has its own set of standards¬†(100 ppb) which is a starting point where the states can choose to be even more protective (like California). The EPA’s enforceable MCL (maximum contaminant level) takes into account the “costs, benefits, and the ability of public water systems to detect and remove contaminants using suitable treatment technologies”.
Here is a 2013 report/video from PBS NewsHour¬†entitled “How to Get Chromium-6 Out of Your Water”.
